Bach's influence on this literature is substantial. After Reger, the twentieth-century saw a significant increase of solo cello compositions and many composers wrote cello suites as well as other genres for the instrument. Max Reger took Bach as an example and fused Baroque elements with contemporary ones in his three cello suites. Bach's cello suites, written between 17 were the exception to this rule, and these works and this genre have had a strong influence on composers writing for solo cello in the last century. Until the twentieth-century, there does not exist the same kind of repertoire for solo cello and especially unaccompanied cello as for other instruments. The goal for this document is to show that using the cello tuning in the double bass can make many pieces in the cello repertoire playable on the bass. There are several pieces arranged for the double bass such as the Bach cello suites and the six Marcello sonatas for violoncello or bass. This analysis will demonstrate similarities and differences in how these instruments use techniques and styles. Also, this document will examine both the viol family and violin family and how they are similar and different, backed by articles and books. This document will mainly examine selected cello pieces by several composers and demonstrate how cellists can adopt fundamental techniques from the double bass and explain the benefits and obstacles pertaining to performance. But because of their different origins, there are distinct techniques and styles native to each instrument. Eventually, the two gradually became similar in style and shape. However, the modern cello and modern double bass originated from two different families, the violin family (viola da braccio) and the viol family (viola da gamba). Since the violin and viola come from the same family, that seems plausible. Today, we see many people who double major in two instruments, specifically, the violin and viola.
